Ensure timely sowing of wheat in rabi season: Centre to states | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Centre has urged all states for timely sowing of wheat and better procurement during the ensuing Rabi marketing season (RMS), taking note of the significant fall in procurement of the winter crop in the previous season.
During the 2022-23 RMS, government agencies had procured barely 188 lakh tonnes of wheat, which was the lowest in the past 13 years. This had forced the government to ban the export of wheat and related products such as atta and even reduce its share in its free foodgrain scheme, PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna.
The Centre made the request at a meeting of state food secretaries on Friday.
“As there was less procurement of wheat during previous RMS 2022-23, all states were requested for timely sowing of wheat and better procurement of wheat during ensuing RMS 2023-24. States were advised to improve procurement infrastructure and complete the paddy procurement and milling operations within the specified timelines for Kharif marketing season 2022-23,” the food ministry said.
The meeting chaired by Union food secretary Sanjeev Chopra also took up various schemes including the implementation of rice fortification, One Nation One Ration Card, smart PDS and route optimisation. He also urged states and UTs to explore additional revenue streams to improve the financial viability of fair price shops.
