By India Today Web Desk: Chetan Sharma, on Friday, November 18, was sacked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the chairman of the men’s selection committee. His team members, Debashish Mohanty, Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh were also removed.
Back in 2020, Sharma replaced Joshi at the helm and he continued for two years. During his tenure with the world’s richest cricket board, India won plenty of bilateral series both at home and overseas. However, when it came to ICC trophies, India flattered to deceive.
Recently, India crashed out of the T20 World Cup in Australia after losing to England in the semi-final at the Adelaide Oval by 10 wickets.
India topped their Super 12 points table after beating Pakistan, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, but failed to carry the momentum into the semis.
The BCCI has invited applications for the posts of national selectors and the deadline to apply is November 28, 2022. Five positions are open and the board has also set quite a few criteria for the applicants.
The fans, in the meantime, were happy after Sharma was sacked. They reminded him about Virat Kohli’s sacking as the ODI skipper a year ago.
Kohli bowed out as the T20I skipper after the World Cup in Oman and the UAE, after which Rohit Sharma replaced him as the captain in limited-overs cricket. Earlier this year, Kohli also stepped down as India’s Test skipper.
One of the fans wrote, “Firstly, the duo “Ganguly & Chetan sharma” created an environment that Kohli’s captaincy is the only reason behind India not winning icc trophies & made Rohit captain. Now, they both got sacked & still Kohli is India’s best performer.!”
