By India Today Web Desk: A late Gareth Bale penalty won Wales a point in the Group of Death in the FIFA World Cup on Monday evening, 21 November. Bale, who was tripped in the penalty box in the 80th minute of the game, slotted a hard hit shot past the USA goalkeeper to keep Wales alive in the tough group.
It was a game of two halves in the Al Rayyan Stadium at Doha, where USA dominated the first half with possession and Wales dominated the second with spirit. A tactical change to remove Dan James from the top and get Kieffer Moore into the playing XI worked wonders for the side as they dominated possession in the attacking third.
With Moore using his body to hold up the ball, Wales were able to break into the wings and use the space left behind by USA, who looked to push for the equalizer. The chance came for Wales, late into the final 10 minutes of the regulation time, when Aaron Ramsey cut in from the right and passed the ball to Gareth Bale.
The former Real Madrid player held the ball with his back to the goal and was fouled by the defender from behind, earning Wales a penalty. Bale, a veteran of many years, did not make a mistake and hit a thundering strike to the left of the keeper, equalising for Wales.
The First Half Story
The United States football team controlled the majority of the ball in the first half after a very frisky start to the game. The ‘underdogs’ as per the surprise call made by President Joe Biden, USA began their first game in a very frisky manner.
Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie slid into players, earning their respective yellow cards as the game seem to lose control. USA’s best player on the pitch, Christian Pulisic seemed to get involved, asking the referee to calm down.
However, the team showed immense maturity by taking control of the ball and moving it around well to keep Wales out of the game. Wales tried long balls in the wide areas of the pitch, but USA kept crowding out two of their main players – Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey to break up the play.
USA’s Timothy Weah, son of Liberian President and former Premier League star George Weah scored the opener in the 36th minute, and handed his team control over the game.
It was one of those games for USA where they did not want the half to end but it did, ending their terrific run in the game.
