By India Today Web Desk: Senegal fans will be heartbroken as star forward Sadio Mane had to withdraw from the FIFA World Cup 2022 as his recovery from injury wasn’t favourable as of Thursday.

Mane was set to lead the African team from the front as he was their hero during the World Cup qualifiers, where they defeated Mohamed Salah’s Egypt.

The 30-year-old had picked up a knock while playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and the injury wasn’t considered to be serious at first.

Bayern’s assistant coach Dino Toppmoeller said that the forward should be ready in time for the World Cup.

“Sadio Mane was hit on the leg, which caused him a little nerve pain. Nothing too serious and his participation in the World Cup should not be in jeopardy,” Toppmoeller told reporters.

Senegal team official Abdoulaye Sow would then announce that Mane wouldn’t be available for the first few games of the tournament.

“We will have to rely on playing the first games without Sadio and win without Sadio because we have 25 players apart from Sadio,” official Abdoulaye Sow said.

“No one would have wanted it, but that’s what’s happened to us.”

However, Senegal team doctor Manuel Afonso has now Mane of the entire competition as he said that the MRI result’s on Thursday has shown that the forward’s recovery isn’t favourable.

“Unfortunately, today’s (Thursday) MRI shows us that the recovery is not as favourable as we hoped and we, unfortunately, resolve to declare Sadio’s withdrawal from the World Cup,” Senegal team doctor Manuel Afonso told reporters.

This comes as a huge blow for Senegal, who were considered to be Africa’s biggest hope in the FIFA World Cup 2022. They have been grouped alongside Netherlands, Qatar and Ecuador in the tournament.

Senegal will take on the Dutch in their opening match on 21st November.
