By India Today Web Desk: Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar on Tuesday said Ben Stokes will be his No. 1 choice for the hottest property in the IPL 2023 auction, scheduled to be held in December. All 10 teams announced their list of retained and released players on the deadline day and Manjrekar felt all-rounders Stokes, Cameron Green and Sam Curran will be among the most sought-after players in the auction.

Ben Stokes last played IPL in 2021 wherein he was ruled out after picking up an injury as early as his first match of the season for the Rajasthan Royals. Stokes opted out of the T20 league last season as he had taken a break from competitive cricket to focus on his mental health.

The England all-rounder did not have a productive time in T20I cricket in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup in Australia. However, Stokes stepped up and delivered in the crunch games for England, including the final against Pakistan. Stokes picked up a wicket and hit a solid unbeaten 52 as England chased down a below-par total on a sluggish Melbourne pitch on November 13.

Stokes averages 25 for 920 runs in 46 matches at a strike rate of 134 in his IPL career, having shone for Rajasthan Royals and now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giant.

“Ben Stokes, straight away. No. 1 (hottest property). He is a match-winner. If you make it to the playoffs, the big stage. These are the people who come to the party.” Sanjay Manjrekar told Star Sports.

Sam Curran was named the Player of the Tournament in T20 World Cup 2022 for his exploits with the ball — 13 wickets in 7 matches. Curran, who picked up 3 wickets in the final against Pakistan, has a proven track record in the IPL, picking up 22 wickets in 2 seasons for Chennai Super Kings.

Curran missed IPL 2022 due to an injury but he is expected to trigger a bidding war with Manjrekar suggesting that Chennai Super Kings might want to pick him to make use of the sluggish conditions in Chennai.

Notably, CSK released their veteran all-rounder Dwayne Bravo on the deadline day on Tuesday.

“Sam Curran is a very interesting English player who has a lot of Asian quality in the way he bowls. So he would ideally be picked by a team that is going to play a lot of home games where the bounce is a little low and the pitch is a bit slow. That is why CSK used him beautifully when he had a big season with them. That would be a consideration,” he added.

“Cameron Green, is a high-quality player and may be more suited to places like the Wankhede Stadium or in Bangalore where there is a bit of bounce and he can enjoy batting as well,” he added.
