By India Today Web Desk: Former Manchester United player and Premier League winner Gary Neville has lamented the possible ending of the Cristiano Ronaldo saga. Neville, who works as a pundit in the Premier League feels that it would be sad if United were to terminate Ronaldo’s contract in the aftermath of the interview controversy.

Manchester United launched an inquiry in the two-part interview series by British journalist Piers Morgan, and are reported to have reached a conclusion inside a day of their inquiry. The club executives reportedly want to terminate the contract of one of their greatest players and they want this to be done as smoothly as possible.

“Sad that it’s come to a point where arguably United’s greatest ever talent is likely to be sacked. It didn’t need to be like this. A mature conversation a few weeks ago between “both parties” could have secured a smooth exit,” Neville wrote on Twitter.

Cristiano Ronaldo walked into the Theatre of Dreams at a very young age where he made his name scoring incredible goals and winning trophies. He left United to pursue his dream at Real Madrid for nine years. Ronaldo then moved to Italy, won the league and then returned to Manchester United with much fanfare.

Things, however, went sideways when Ronaldo became the centre of attraction in the Erik ten Hag era. Ronaldo’s attitude was questioned on and off the pitch and after multiple incidents with the coach, Ronaldo released an explosive interview with Piers Morgan calling out ten Hag and the club itself. He took potshots at former teammate Wayne Rooney among others and said that many among the current United players would not have a long career.

Neville, who has been a critic of Ronaldo this season got a cold shoulder from the player on live TV after criticising his attitude in United’s game vs Tottenham. The former player is a well known and liked pundit in the matters of his former club.
