Manika Batra 1st Indian woman to advance to Asian Cup semi-final after beating Taipei’s Chen Szu Yu in thrilling 7-setter
Manika Batra defeated World No.26 Chen Szu Yu from Taipei 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9 in the quarterfinal of the ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup on Friday, November 18.

By India Today Web Desk: Ace Indian paddler, Manika Batra, on Friday, November 18, advanced to the semi-final of the women’s singles in the ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup after beating Taipei’s Chen Szu Yu 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9 in the quarterfinals.
Batra, currently ranked No.44 in the world, also became the only Indian woman to qualify for the semis of the tournament. She also became the second Indian after Chetan Baboor to reach the last four of the championship.
After being beaten black and blue in the opening set, Batra came back strongly and took a 3-1 lead with victories in three sets in a row.
However, Szu Yu, also the World No.23, showed nerves of steel to make it 3-3 and take the match into the deciding set. The decider also went right down to the wire where Manika managed to edge past her opponent.
Batra carried her dream run after she got the better of World No.7 Chen Xingtong in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday, October 17. Manika won the match 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9. It was also the third Chinese opponent she defeated in her career.
After the massive upset, the 27-year-old Manika pledged to keep working harder and carry the momentum forward.
Manika took to Twitter and wrote, “I am really happy beating world no. 7 in the TT Asia Cup, will just continue playing my best and keep this focus for next rounds. This is my 3rd win against Chinese player recently. Thank you everyone for supporting and cheering for me.
