New Parliament building inauguration: Bureaucrats, veterans, academicians condemn opposition boycott | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: As many as 270 eminent citizens, including retired bureaucrats, armed forces officers and academicians, have condemned the opposition political parties for boycotting the inauguration of the new parliament building, scheduled on May 28. As many as 20 opposition parties, led by the Congress, have boycotted the function on the grounds that the new building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, instead of President Droupadi Murmu.
The eminent citizens, consisting of 88 retired bureaucrats – including 10 ambassadors – 100 retired armed forces officers and 82 academicians, have run a signature campaign condemning the behaviour of the opposition parties.
An open letter, titled “Inauguration of the new Parliament building, a moment of pride for India and Indians”, and undersigned by former ambassador Bhaswati Mukherjee, has termed the opposition’s arguments against attending the event “skeletal, immature, whimsy and hollow, and most of all flagrant display of non-democratic posturing”.
“The democratically elected Prime Minister of India, who has inspired a billion Indians with his … strategic vision, commitment to deliver and most of all Indianness is unpalatable to the Congress and other opposition parties with a similar worldview,” the letter released on Friday read.
The letter criticised the opposition parties saying “how can the Family First-driven parties reconcile to an India-First approach”.
