Population reaching stabilising level: SC junks PIL on two-child norm | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to the Centre to enforce ‘two-child’ norm in the country to control the rising population, saying the population is reaching a stable level and it is for the government to look at the issue.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka said the judiciary cannot get into all the issues and these social issues should be examined and decided by the government.
“Population is not something which will stop in one day. We are approaching the stabilising level. Some states are doing better than others,” the bench observed.
BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, one of the petitioners in the case, pleaded that the court at least direct the law commission to prepare a report on population explosion in the country and he be allowed to file representation before the authority concerned. But the court turned down his plea.
