By Sabyasachi Chowdhury: Right-handed batter Narayan Jagadeesan, on Saturday, November 19, equalled Virat Kohli’s record of most centuries in a single edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Kohli scored four centuries in the 2008-09 season after he got scores of 102, 119*, 124 and 114. The now 34-year-old was also the leading run-scorer that season after racking up 534 runs from seven matches at an average of 89.
Jagadeesan joined Kohli as one of the five batters to score most hundreds in a single edition of the tournament (4). The other batters on the list are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal.
Jagadeesan is currently the leading run-scorer in the ongoing VHT as he has racked up 522 runs from five matches at an average of 130.50 and a strike-rate of 105.66 with four centuries and a top score of 168.
Jagadeesan also joined Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa’s Alviro Peterson and Padikkal to score four centuries on the trot in List A cricket.
On Saturday, Jagadeesan scored 128 runs off 123 balls with six fours and as many sixes against Haryana at the KSCA Cricket (2) Ground in Alur.
On the back of his knock, Tamil Nadu beat Haryana by 151 runs. Jagadeesan got to his century off 99 balls and helped his team post 284 for the loss of seven wickets after being put in to bat first.
In 41 List A matches, Jagadeesan has scored 1782 runs at an average of 44.55 with seven centuries and six half-centuries.
Recently, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) released eight players and one of them was Jagadeesan. The others are KM Asif, Adam Milne, Chris Jordan, Robin Uthappa, Hari Nishaanth, Bhagath Varma and Dwayne Bravo.
